Nice houses two exceptional art museums dedicated to some of the greatest artists of the 20th Century: Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall.

Located on a hill in a beautiful olive grove, the Matisse Museum is housed in a 17th Century “folly” built in the Genoese style, with trompe l’oeil decorations on the façade. The collection was donated by Matisse and his heirs: paintings, sculptures, drawings, paper cut-outs, illustrated books, ceramics, stained glass windows as well as many objects that once belonged to him.

Marc Chagall, who spent the last years of his life in nearby St. Paul, where he died in 1985, loved the Côte d’Azur and Provence. This exceptional museum holds over 450 works of artand is based on a single theme: the Old Testament. This classic theme is approached with eclectic techniques and diverse means like mosaics, sculptures, wall tapestries, stained glass windows, pastels, etchings and. For Chagall lovers, this is a must!
