Cellar of the Hotel de Paris, A real story behind it !

When the Hotel de Paris was built in 1864, the cellars were practically forgotten. Wine bottles were mostly shipped from Bordeaux to Nice and then transported to Monaco. Ten years later, it was decided to redesign the cellars on the model of wine storehouses in Bordeaux. During World War II, in order to avoid the looting of the most prestigious bottles, the back of the cellars were hidden by thousands of empty bottles piled up. Nobody could have imagined that behind those abandoned bottles laid such a wonderful treasure! This allowed the hotel to save among other things, some prestigious bottles like Château Yquem 1890, Château Léoville Poyferré 1895, Château Margaux 1920, Mission Haut Brion 1920, Château Lafite Rothschild 1935, to name just a few!

Today the Central Cellar with its, authenticity, equipment, number and value of its wines is without a doubt the most important hotel-restaurant cellar in the world. In this outstanding cellar, old bottles of cognac occupy a place of honor with the oldest dating back to 1800.
At night, your guests will enjoy a fabulous dinner served in the historical Grand Cellar. Guests will meet in the hotel lobby where they will be welcomed by the Head Wine Waiter. Afterwards he will invite them to come down to the Cellar, passing through several corridors and sharing the history of this extraordinary place, in this special atmosphere. Guests will be accompanied to the different areas that are subdivided into several sections. The Head Wine Waiter will give special attention to these famous Chateaus by telling stories and sharing secrets about its reserves, which make the Wine Cellar so exceptional. At the end of the visit, you will also enter the “Caveau”, a room that will be set-up for dinner with round tables and decorated with candles and flowers, to create an enchanted intimate atmosphere.

Château de Bellet
The Bellet vineyard, located within the city’s boundaries, produces some of Provence’s best vintage wines.

The castle is a fine example of the ancient Niçoise architecture: the reddish-ochre façade features windows and doors with green shutters, yellow frames and displays an astonishing trompe-l’oeil effect. This historical residence of the Barons of Bellet has kept its winemaking tradition for four centuries; the present owner, Ghislain de Charnacé, is the grandson of the Baron de Bellet. He is a genuine winemaker who cultivates 9 hectares of vineyards.
The Tour

The tasting takes place in a part of the castle called “ La Baronnerie”, name suggested by a friend of the family, local novelist Raoul Mille. This beautiful room overlooks the sloping hills of Nice, is adorned with family keepsakes and enlightened by Venetian yellow glass wall-lamps. The exposed framework, curtains, discreet furniture and large fireplace make this room an ideal setting for your special event.
